another check minus for college journalism

Last February, I blogged about an article published in Central Connecticut State University’s newspaper, The Recorder, called, “Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It.” The “satirical” tirade was disgraceful to women and to college journalism. The article explained that rape is a magical experience and a help to society. It went on to say that ugly women would never know the joy of sex if it weren’t for rape… it was disgusting (here is my post about this, with a copy of the article).

And then, today, I saw this. Max Karson, of the University of Colorado, wrote a column for his college newspaper, The Campus Press, entitled, “If it’s war the Asians want… It’s war they’ll get.” It was published on Feb. 18 and starts by pointing out the “tension between the white students and the Asian students” at the UC campus. Karson then relays a story about an experience he had with an Asian student that made him realize that Asian people hate white people. He says, “They hate us all. And I say it’s time we start hating them back.” His article goes on to detail a plan he has to torture and humiliate the Asian population at UC … it is physically revolting – so if you read it – do so with caution.

I don’t know who these guys think they are. They act like Stephen Colbert – who I don’t really get in the first place. Colbert is apparently “satirical” or something… and yeah, his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was pretty in line… but beyond that – I think he’s a dope. These college writers are just too dense to realize Stephen Colbert is not a journalist. They’re satire is not funny – it’s ripe with gross, harmful, and hurtful stereotypes, racism, and sexism. And it totally makes college journalism look like religious pamphlets passed out on street corners!!!

What’s with this trend?

when i was cool…

When my post about Bangs, was on my front page, I would get, like, hundreds of views a day. Now, I’m back down to like, four.

Last week I had another encounter with my uncoolness. I was working, late, and I asked someone else to stay late as well, not even realizing the day. He basically looked at me like I was the most uncool thing in the world – and just said, “It’s Friday.” To which I said, “Hmm, I guess it is, isn’t i?” It totally gave me away.

I just got back from the most amazing show…

Siouxsie Sioux played at the Fillmore tonight … it was fantastic. Siouxsie (from 80’s “goth/punk” band, Siouxsie and the Banshees) released a solo album (MantaRay) last year and is now touring. She’s only stopping in a few US cities… thank god SF was one of them!

This woman is just so amazing… her music is rad on CD, but she is unbeatable live. She has so much energy and does a great job at interacting with the audience. I didn’t feel worthy enough to be there… so AMAZING!

hip to be cool.

A couple of nights ago, I went to Oakland’s Art Murmur. The first Friday of every month, a lot of the small galleries in downtown open up, allowing free admission to their spaces and some serve food and drinks. It was pretty happening and reminiscent of a block party. I can’t believe I’ve lived here for four years and had never attended.

There was definitely an “environmental” theme throughout most of the venues. I wasn’t really surprised, given the current conversations with Global Warming and climate change… it’s definitely cool to see how that translates into art work. My favorite pieces were at Johansson Projects.

Dendrochronograph No. 1 (Self)

 Dendrochronograph No. 2 (Dad)

They are by Kyle Monhollen. He laser-etched timelines into sections of Eastern White Pine Trees. So cool!

new(ish) hobby

For my birthday (back in October), I bought myself a fish tank. I had one in high school, and decided to reignite the hobby. It’s a lot of work and kind of a pain sometimes – like, another thing to clean every couple weeks. But, overall, I’m totally enjoying it. My favorite part is naming the fish and decorating (and redecorating) the tank.

In high school, I had platies, which, are pretty basic. Now, I have cichlids, which are more fun. They  have personalities, they get bigger and are pretty aggressive (making it entertaining to feed them). It started with Goldie and Hahn. Goldie died :( . I got White Fang and Jailbird. They all look different, but here’s the basic idea:

So, now I have three, and I think I need a bigger tank… which means I’ll get more fish, and then need an even bigger tank. It’s kind of a viscious and addictive cycle.

Anyway, today my friend showed me this:

Which is beyond amazing. Here is the link for more views of this amazing wonder. (Via Boing Boing)
