The Nearest Corridor

Divisadero, the large street near my apartment, is being completely revamped. I heard a rumor the new set up is supposed to look like Octavia Street, which I have mixed feelings about. As it is, Divisadero is pocked and scabbed and it feels like you are off-roading when you drive down it – so repairs are definitely in need. The Octavia Street model is confusing and flawed, so hopefully they have edited it for a better pedestrian/bicycle/car experience.

Of course, all the money for these repairs is coming from the Federal stimulus, as CA is broke as a joke and all city based street repairs have been stalled.

The work goes on, for about a month, from what I’ve heard. The street I live on has been closed all week. There are major construction vehicles, barriers and men in orange vests everywhere. In fact, for the past few days, I have had major street crossing anxiety. All the sidewalks and crosswalks are closed off, meaning you can only get across the street if you walk in the middle of the road, and even then you could end up knee deep in concrete. It would make sense to me to walk down the next block to cross, but, those intersections are barriered off as well. The other day I ended up just sort of pacing between a parked dump truck and a back hoe, until I was noticed by one of the workers. He was kind enough to escort me to the middle of the intersection, where I promptly leapt over a cement stream and ran through three lanes of pissed off drivers to the safety of a coned off corner.

Normally, I am not like this. In fact, in the past I have discussed authoring a book called “How to Walk in a City,” in which I would disclose tips to city dwellers about how to properly walk around. These tips would include: walk on the right side of the side-walk, similar to when you drive and just because it says “Don’t Walk,” as long as there are no cars coming, you can cross the street. This book would also, perhaps, have an addendum called “How to Ride your Bike in a City.” The only thing I would say in that section is: Don’t be an asshole.

Maybe it’s just the fumes from the construction vehicles, but I really feel this project has thrown me through a loop.

forget-me-not-growing-basics0

The forget-me-not is the flower of September. I am into the color.

I plan to paint my kitchen in the next month or so… I’m thinkin’ fire engine red? What do you think?

This poster became really (re)popular a few years ago. Originally, it was a WWII poster plastered in England to inspire comfort during a time of world unrest. Today, you can buy it in a post card, mouse pad or tee-shirt form. I love it.

keep-calm

I also like this incarnation:

And I can see the humor in this one:

A call to the world

Someone needs to invent wireless headphones. I am rough on my mini-speakers, and I’m tired of having to buy a new pair every few  months.

I would so totally buy a pair of wireless ones. I don’t think I’m alone in this.

My Fave SF Hizouze

I have a favorite house in San Francisco. There are a lot to choose from, but I think I found one. A goal, if you will.

It’s pretty simple compared to the ornate Victorians that command this part of the city. It’s a little bit deco and a little bit modern… with purple accents. My favorite part of my favorite house is the door:

I love the boldness of the address. A closer picture of the whole thing:

And the row of houses (Victorians) around it:

new(ish) hobby

Posted in animals, art, design, me on February 4, 2008 by taylored

For my birthday (back in October), I bought myself a fish tank. I had one in high school, and decided to reignite the hobby. It’s a lot of work and kind of a pain sometimes – like, another thing to clean every couple weeks. But, overall, I’m totally enjoying it. My favorite part is naming the fish and decorating (and redecorating) the tank.

In high school, I had platies, which, are pretty basic. Now, I have cichlids, which are more fun. They  have personalities, they get bigger and are pretty aggressive (making it entertaining to feed them). It started with Goldie and Hahn. Goldie died :( . I got White Fang and Jailbird. They all look different, but here’s the basic idea:

So, now I have three, and I think I need a bigger tank… which means I’ll get more fish, and then need an even bigger tank. It’s kind of a viscious and addictive cycle.

Anyway, today my friend showed me this:

Which is beyond amazing. Here is the link for more views of this amazing wonder. (Via Boing Boing)

Since I can’t afford to change my personal style, I decided to change the style of my blog.

Oh, 2007.

I miss you, miss you.

Things I really miss:

1. Pet Nets:

Looked like this:

And when used properly, looked like this:

These were so amazing, and a large part of my childhood. It always hung above my bed, I always enjoyed re-arranging the stuffed animals. Lately, as I’ve gotten more into having my own apartment and decorating it – I’ve been thinking about a way to use a Pet Net, without it actually  being a Pet Net. Like – I don’t want to look 7 by having a bunch of furry things smiling down from the corner of my room. But – it’s a good idea… to store stuff in the upper corner of a room.

2. Loveline

In the late nineties – as a new teenager – I loved to sneak and watch Loveline. At that point, the radio show that started on Los Angeles airwaves in 1983, was running live on MTV. I could really care less about the hosts, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla, it was all about the “sexy” phone calls - guys with three-inch extremities and girls with mysterious rashes.

As a late teen, after Loveline went from MTV back to radio, my weeknight 10 pm – 12 am hours were spent painting away my teenage angst and listening to strangers broadcasting their relationship and bodily issues. My interest did not lay so much in the callers, but in the hosts (though Adam is a total asshole, he was quite hilarious). The interactions between Drew and Adam and their callers were so funny and entertaining! I was such a hard-core fan, I even bought Dr. Drew’s book, Cracked.

Now, Adam has left, to take Howard Stern’s place in a nation-wide morning broadcast. Dr. Drew still hosts Loveline, with Stryker, though I haven’t listened in a few years.

whoa! 2007 is great.
